A Week After The Party

This last week in Johannesburg – after the Sunday Fifa final – seemed almost like mid-January. A hiatus, to say the least.

South Coast Solutions

The brief to the architect was to take maximum advantage of the typical KZN south-coast views, both of sea and rolling sugar cane hills and valleys. Further, to recognise climatic factors; north-east and south-west prevailing winds, plus high humidity in the January to March season.

Light Fantastic
Chilean architect Sebastian Irarrazaval created this striking home for his lighting specialist brother.
All-Season Cruiser
This highly appealing convertible is the latest addition to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class range. An open-top two-door, it features the classic fabric soft top of the pure cabriolet.
Ground Rules
In 2010, contemporary interior design in South Africa is reaching new levels of expertise. Yet, in a still recessive market, making space work – the synergy between architects and interior designers / decorators – is ever more vital.
House of Stone
I’ve just returned from 5 days in Victoria Falls, that vital oasis of foreign tourism and the hard currency that has kept Robert Mugabe’s tyrannical regime alive over almost two decades.
Making Light Work
Well considered illumination plays a major role in the look and feel of any interior. From low-voltage halogen down-lights and up-lights – in ceilings, bulkheads and even floor locations – the judicious use of lighting creates ambience and improves functionality.
Vertical Dimensions
This London townhouse is a large, end-of-terrace Victorian property, which extends over four floors. It was built in 1890 and – recently since a considerable re-model – now has five bedrooms, four bathrooms (three of which are en suite) and two dressing rooms.
Design Talks July/August 2010
Colin Sharp chats with three design specialists, all of which operate from Johannesburg but complete projects nationally.
Urban Crossover
The X1 is the latest derivative in the 1-series range and its development was almost a foregone conclusion. Yet, in reality it manifests as a vehicle that will fulfill certain dreams and excite mostly appreciative comment.
Vital Ingredient
Quick and delicious, these easy, fuss-free mushroom recipes pack bold, fresh flavours. With winter upon us, the home cook’s thoughts turn to tasty easy-to-prepare dishes that will keep calorific intake under control, whilst delivering all the comforts and rich flavours of traditional winter feasts, enjoyed in front of a glowing fire.
Rudie van Rensburg
The artist was born in Bloemfontein and obtained his BA (Communications) degree at the University of the Free State, subsequently working as a press journalist and later as a manager in a marketing environment.
Contemporary Canvas
Architect Stefan Antoni’s own home on the Cape Atlantic coast is in what can only be described as an enviable location. This is quite an unusual site of 528m2, being triangular with the long side of the triangle facing one of the most spectacular views of Cape Town.
Contemporary Eclipse
Specialists in the retail of exclusive furniture and hardware supplies, Eclipse, are pleased to announce the launch of their contemporary chair collection for Summer 2010.
The Beautiful Game
Further to my last missive, it now seems that 465 000 people have visited SA for the Fifa event (State figures).
Favourable Destination?
Having just sent the latest issue to the printer - No. 218 July / August - I’m thinking yet again about the Fifa World Cup and what it could have/ might have / will bring to this country.
Eastern Share
How many open-minded individuals out there these days are discovering the benefits of ancient Asian practices? Actually, how many are not? People who have not seeked ancient methods or paths to quintessential peace are few and far between in this ever-increasing climate of competition. Within sometimes anxiety provoking endeavours, there is thankfully a remarkable, rising consciousness due to advancements in global communication and curiosity. Who hasn’t given yoga, martial arts or some form of meditation a shot – in the hope of seeking solace and a path to greater fulfillment?
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
With the 2010 Soccer World Cup upon us – and two epic rugby matches played in Orlando Stadium, Soweto in May – the patriotic unity among South Africans is likely at an all time high, since the post-Mandela election period.
Habitat On-line
This new website – and the variety of options it offers – is something of a milestone in Habitat’s development, albeit 37 years of existence in South Africa.
Luxury Awaits
The new OKHA store has recently opened its doors to the public and a new world of luxury awaits.
