New Year – 2012

We’ve been around for 39 years. Habitat was first published in March 1973 and there have been more than a few gradients on our graph – both upside and downside – in those almost four decades.

Design Language
The writer was fortunate to join the BMW EuroStyle Tour to Germany in September. It began with a spectacular Frankfurt Motor Show and continued in Munich and its environs, encompassing an extravaganza of high-end design in various fields; BMW being a believer that a mélange of cutting-edge elements from various sectors benefit the overall result.
Window On The Sea
Ibiza is situated in the Gulf of Valencia, 80 kilometres from the Balearic main island of Majorca and 90 kilometres from the Spanish mainland.
Luxury Legend
Johnnie Walker® Blue Label™, the pinnacle of Scotch Whisky blending from the House of Johnnie Walker, is celebrating epic achievements of past and present as it launches a new look for its iconic luxury bottle which will be available in South Africa in October.
Cutting Edge
Proudly South African, Nicolson Russell designs, manufactures and imports designer cutlery from around the world – while committed to introducing new and different products allowing for variety and intrigue.
Design Talks November/December 2011
Colin Sharp chats with kitchen design fundi, Wendy Grater and interior decoration guru, Chris Weylandt about their current thoughts and future plans.
Seamless Transition
Measuring a generous 800m2 on a sizeable stand of 2 000m2, this recently renovated home evolved from an existing structure, circa 1940’s. This was sympathetically redesigned to the client’s brief, with an extra storey added.
Cover Story
Habitat is 38 years old plus and – apart from a few cosmetic changes – the cover has remained the same for the past decade, albeit the internal content not so.
Style Français
The Italians are venerable stylists and maintain that they lead the world in the design of a broad range of consumer objects from fashion to furniture and motor vehicles .
Home Comforts
Luis Ferreira da Silva is an architect who has completed notable work in Mozambique, Europe and South Africa where he has owned a number of homes. A more recent acquisition is this country retreat in Greyton, a tranquil village in the Cape’s rural hinterland where the architect lives, works and rides horses.
Country Cuisine
Lethabo Lodge, on the Crocodile River off the R512 Lanseria highway is a quite special venue offering function facilities, accommodation and now fine cuisine.
Coherent Solutions
This London-based designer enjoys the challenge of bringing new life to tired houses via innovative problem solving; involving contemporary systems, finishes and decoration.
Vital Statistics
Within what are the most noticed spaces in any home, the contribution of both kitchen and bathroom far exceeds their spatial dimensions; yet the outlay they demand is considerable.
Victorian Evolution
Built in the 1840s, this five storey, detached Victorian villa is located in the desirable conservation area of Belsize Park, London. Extensive renovation was required to both the exterior and interior following a number of unsympathetic past alterations. A South African-born architect found solutions.
A Considered Choice
I’ve never really liked the idea of a 5-door coupé and certain of the renditions on the South African market are not that appealing. It really is not easy to stretch that ellipse into aesthetic form; often something has to suffer design-wise.
Leon De Bliquy
Leon de Bliquy makes poetry visible, drawing luminous imagery from the deep recesses of his introspective mind. In the past and continuous present he has been inspired by the celebrated poet D.J. Opperman and the Spanish poet Lorca.
An Island Time Forgot
When considering holidays, chances are that thoughts concentrate on the romantic capitals of Europe before thinking of Africa. Yet, this continent has much to offer, as Fraser and Karla Dodge discovered on a visit to Lamu Island off the north- east Kenyan coast.
Splendid Isolation
Silverhurst is a model 21st century sanctuary. Located in exclusive Upper Constantia, Cape Town this is one of a number of large family homes tucked away in a gated estate.
The Old Country
If Malema, Mass Action and Mediocrity eventually get too much there is always dear old Europe to consider, albeit currently not so healthy financially.
