Climate Control 2012

I will always recall my first May – late-Autumn – in Johannesburg, many decades ago. I had arrived from the UK Spring and was renting a circa ‘50s bungalow in Craighall Park. We were chilled to the bone after dark; such were the thin walls and large areas of glass, flimsy curtains and no fireplaces. A puny electric heater did little to rectify the situation. This was an early lesson in climate control in South Africa.

High Society

Perched above the city is the suburb of Örgryte: a lofty location that enjoys panoramic views which reach out to the west. Villa Woldu’s siting offers a stunning vista at the top of the road that climbs up from the main highway to Stockholm.

Wineland Vistas

This 810m² double storey house is set on a 1 300m² north-facing site overlooking the 18th hole at Pearl Valley Golf Estate. Its location is just a short stroll away from the main clubhouse and was carefully orientated to maximise views of the surrounding Franschhoek and Paarl mountains.

Design Talks May/June 2012 Issue

Colin Sharp chats with the originator, Mohammed Patel of a one-stop bathroom lifestyle boutique, Trend Lifestyle.

African Zen
High on the slopes of Lion’s Head above Bantry Bay, Cape Town – an enviable location – this home enjoys panoramic views across the bay and overlooks Sea Point and Robben Island. It spans 1 000m2 undercover on a 2 000m2 fall of land.
Vertical Influences
They display depth and can visually delight. Walls – and the cocktail of treatments available to dress them – help define our living spaces and nurture a relationship. 2012 wall decoration is allowing us to dream again. Décor elements provoke that much more desire due to their feature foils; walls re-focus attention and help us to see the interior anew as a space that’s alive, rather than just being an obvious structural necessity.
Retro Off-Roader
FJ Cruiser is an unusual, quasi military-styled SUV. Its quirky retro looks guarantee second and third glances. It’s something of an odd-ball, but it will handle terrain in many places that its softer peers will not.
Design Talks - March/April 2012
Colin Sharp chats with a sleep expert whose product is based on NASA technology and is globally acclaimed.
In Praise of Small Spaces
The marketers of residential property confirm that kitchens and bathrooms are the ‘most important rooms’ in virtually any home. In 2012 their careful consideration is a prerequisite, even with more limited budgets, and contemporary solutions remain at the fore in Habitat. Our bi-annual FOCUS seeks to showcase the latest trends in both design and materials for these vital interiors; those in the know provide informed comment.
Tarmac to Trail
The new Touareg is a purposeful looking, high-end 4X4 with all the whistles and bells necessary to make on-tar or bush driving a comfortable experience. VW rate it as the most technologically innovative Volkswagen yet.
Core Addition
The architect describes this house as an overtly contemporary extension to a Queenslander cottage on a typical small stand in inner-city Brisbane.
The Bay View
An existing Edwardian house in Buena Vista, San Francisco was the subject of a considerable renovation by local architects, Feldman Architecture. This began as an effort to transform a segmented two-storey residence into a vertically integrated, contemporary garden home.
Architecture 2012
As ever waving the flag for modernism in design, Habitat devotes space in the first issue of each New Year to contemporary architecture and the design infrastructure that supports it. We include comment from professionals, both local and international.
Coastal Modern
This 700 square metre panhandle – a vacant subdivision from a larger site – is situated off prestigious Geneva Drive in Camps Bay.
Simon Jones
Simon Jones first exhibited over three decades ago and has appeared in Habitat previously.
Icon In The Making
I’ve been lucky enough to visit Bentley at Crewe near Liverpool so I understand their ethos. And I’ve twice met Raul Pires, the designer of the iconic Continental GT and now chief exterior stylist at Bentley.
Floor and All
Over the past 38 years Cemcrete has become a world leader in the field of cement-based finishes. Their dedication to quality is unwavering and technical support exceptional.
Beach Poise
One of the few remaining and pristine sea-front locations on the Cape West coast is Pearl Bay in Yzerfontein.
Minimal Aspect
New York’s tenacious mayor, billionaire Michael Bloomberg, knows when to strike a deal. When the vacant Alexander’s department store was demolished, he took the opportunity to acquire one of the most sought-after sites to become available in the new millennium.
Design Talks January/February 2012
Colin Sharp chats with a Johannesburg-based specialist in upper-echelon kitchen design. He is an industry stalwart who has pioneered the manufacture of top quality kitchens in South Africa.
New Year – 2012
We’ve been around for 39 years. Habitat was first published in March 1973 and there have been more than a few gradients on our graph – both upside and downside – in those almost four decades.
Natural Harmony
A sociable couple’s boldly geometric new-build in a location near Cape Town blends sensitively into the landscape. It also provides equal emphasis on the interior and exterior.

PUBLISHER'S MESSAGE
Cause and Effect

Since last I wrote, there have been major rumblings in this country’s political system, a resulting depreciation of our international image and a downgrading of our risk rating. Sad indeed, because South Africa is such a wonderful country and surely deserves enlightened leaders, not those who spend more time squabbling than achieving.

Collin Cole

Collin Cole’s work is largely autobiographical, both a response to and a reflection of his personal life. DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE
London Townhouse

Close to the wide open spaces of Clapham Common, in London, designer Sean Cochrane’s brief was to create an elegant home for a family of seven. It would succeed in incorporating timeless design whilst catering for the differences in the children’s needs and personal tastes.
