Christopher Langley is an artist influenced by religious beliefs and spiritual philosophies. He has carried out a number of private commissions for woodcarvings, paintings and the occasional bronze for a range of clients, mostly in Europe. South African-born, he is now resident in the UK.
Over the past two years he carved an elaborate architrave and a donations bowl for the Ipswich Buddhist Centre in the UK. An enthusiastic Buddhist, he has written and given talks on Buddhist art and presented written reviews for the Buddhist arts magazine; Urthona.
His sculpture engages with line, concave, convex and vertical forms. It seeks to combine containment with aspiration, which derives from his religious practices of meditation and devotion. These works are about particular characters, frequently of a religious nature, but sometimes drawn from the other arts such as literature and music.
