Carpet manufacturer Luci Nouwens, artist Catherine Christie and kitchen importer, Fabrizio Cavazzuti chat with Colin Sharp about design options within their respective spheres of operation.
Luci Nouwens
Ever since she can remember, her family’s livelihood has been in textiles. Her father, carpet legend Cornelis Nouwens, came from a wool textile background in Tilburg, Holland, where his father also owned a carpet factory. In 1962 Nouwens Carpets was established in Harrismith, OFS and here Luci Nouwens would follow the family tradition in carpet craftsmanship. From a tender age, all the Nouwens children played with fibres and yarns so that carpets became part of their lives. Luci Nouwens learned from the best and gained experience in every aspect of the business.
Catherine Christie
She has been one of SA’s celebrated contemporary artists of the last decade, largely by being self-taught, by-passing academia and breaking all the moulds. In 2004 she built a gallery, particularly to showcase her own work in a two year solo exhibition, and it’s regarded as ‘one of the most beautiful galleries in the Southern hemisphere.’ In 2006 Catherine Christie was nominated SA Businesswoman of the Year in Culture and the Arts. How did she achieve these accolades, and what is her rationale? She says: ‘Besides having a good eye for composition, the foremost requirement to becoming a noted artist is being a good businessperson, who understands gaps in the market.’ She has delivered this with works which hang in leading contemporary homes both locally and abroad. Her wild ‘soul prints’ in oil on canvas helps bring spaces to life. This is somewhat akin to the disposition of the artist herself; very energetic and inspiring is the opinion of most who meet her.
Fabrizio Cavazzuti
SCIC Casa Import (Pty) Ltd. was founded in 1999 by Rebecca Longari and Fabrizio Cavazzuti. SCIC acts as an importer, distributor and installer of exclusive Italian products for both residential and commercial market segments. Says Fabrizio Cavazzuti: ‘Designing a kitchen is not only about having a functional space but rather about understanding the client’s lifestyle and culture. South Africa is a nation of many different cultures, which actually facilitates using the span of SCIC’s range. Our goal is to introduce the epitome of design, quality and fashion to those who appreciate continental trends. The key is being able to recognise and retain what is classical while challenging the market with innovation.’ So these Italian product ranges vary in design, from classical to modern, and obviously in price. The collection includes contract kitchens that provide a mix of modular high-end kitchen elements while being cost effective and competitive in this market segment.
