I’ve just returned from 5 days in Victoria Falls, that vital oasis of foreign tourism and the hard currency that has kept Robert Mugabe’s tyrannical regime alive over almost two decades.
Zimbabwe is now a US$ dollar economy, which is better for locals who saw the price of a loaf of bread escalating from Z$1 billion to Z$5 billion in just one week. Yet the gentleman who caused this catastrophic inflation - by his ludicrous polices of claiming white-owned farmlands - the very essence of the country’s agriculture and the core of the economy - is still in power. Local people I talked to said that speaking out against the ZANU PF government very often resulted in ‘disappearing’. They wait, in considerable hope, for the man himself to disappear naturally. That said, Vic Falls is still as beautiful as ever and there is plenty to do in a 4-5 days stay. Activities include leaping off the gorge - or traversing it on a slender cable - white-water rafting on the Zambezi, river cruises, elephant riding, helicopter trips, the spectacular Falls and Big-Five safaris. We got there on Air Zimbabwe, on their recently re-introduced 3 times per week JHB-VF service. Flights were comfortable and arrived and left on time, although the food on board left more than a little to be desired. That goes for the food generally in Zimbabwe, a sort of throw-back to the ghastly English concoctions of my youth. Even with fine local ingredients, they seem to not get it right. In truth, we stayed in the Stanley & Livingstone, a Rani resort just outside of town and the cuisine there was very edible indeed. As a long week-end, Vic Falls is an ideal destination, just 90 minutes from Johannesburg, and packages are more than tempting currently..

I had been waiting to drive an R8 since the original launch, but to no avail. Yet the more recently launched V10 was obviously the ultimate and it finally arrived in R-tronic configuration. It’s a supercar in every respect and truly rates very high, being among the best cars I’ve ever driven.
