Automotive fascination and high-tech synergise at the highest level in Mercedes-Benz’ SLS AMG. This iconic model embodies purist design, intelligent lightweight construction, superior handling dynamics and massive power in a thoroughbred supercar.
The SLS AMG is the first independently developed vehicle from Mercedes-AMG GmbH and is a reinterpretation of the classic Mercedes-Benz 300SL. Stylistic highlights include striking gull-wing doors, long bonnet, a low cabin positioned well to the rear, and short rear-end with extendable rear aerofoil. The wide radiator grille with large MB star, wing-shaped cross fin, plus bonnet and flank fins, also hark back to the legendary sports car of the 1950s.
SLS AMG has an aluminium space-frame body and its AMG 6.3-litre V8 front / mid-engine develops 420kW and 650Nm of torque via the seven-speed double-declutch transmission in a transaxle configuration. Driving it is a unique experience because the car is at once brutal, noisy, frightening, and yet captivatingly magnificent. This is the F1 safety car after all.
First, climb over the high door sill into the shell-like bucket seat and stare out over the long bonnet. Press start and the thunder begins, the SLS AMG rumbles on the tar and accelerates literally quite shockingly. The front / rear weight distribution of 47 to 53 percent and a low centre of gravity offer uncompromising handling and the SLS AMG hurtles from 0 to 100km/h in 3.8 seconds; (this I did) – before going on to a top speed of 317km/h, albeit electronically limited – (this I did not).

Climate Control 2012
I will always recall my first May – late-Autumn – in Johannesburg, many decades ago. I had arrived from the UK Spring and was renting a circa ‘50s bungalow in Craighall Park. We were chilled to the bone after dark; such were the thin walls and large areas of glass, flimsy curtains and no fireplaces. A puny electric heater did little to rectify the situation. This was an early lesson in climate control in South Africa.
DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE
High Society
Perched above the city is the suburb of Örgryte: a lofty location that enjoys panoramic views which reach out to the west. Villa Woldu’s siting offers a stunning vista at the top of the road that climbs up from the main highway to Stockholm.
