De Bliquy was born in 1943 and, after matriculating, studied at the Michaelis School of Art, the Cape College and subsequently at the National Academy in Antwerp. He later gained a BA at the University of the OFS and a Master of Fine Art at Rhodes University. Graphic design and lithography printing techniques were his chosen direction, in particular the phenomenon of change in graphic images through transfer and overprinting techniques.
He references the animated folklore of the Koi San, sharing their elemental capacity to metamorphose their surroundings into tales of magical shamanic import. He is a powerful image maker who recognises the edge of reality in his horizon line, that division between the conscious and unconscious mind.
From an early age his world was perceived through blunted sight. The metaphysical, mythology, poetry, literature, spirit of place and the eternal adventure in the exploration of being have been a constant source of inspiration. The works of Odysseus Elytis, Nikos Kazantzakis and Federico Garcia Lorca have inspired several exhibitions.
