Son of iconic South African painter Gerhard Batha, 25 year old Luke Batha was exposed to art from an early age, yet did not follow automatically in his Viennese-born father’s footsteps.
He recalls: ‘At the age of 10, I went on holiday with my parents to the south of France and there happened to be no TV. The only thing to do to amuse myself was to draw and paint and I did this for about a month. My father had realised that I could draw and encouraged me to do my own thing. He never actually forced me to come to his studio in order to pick up techniques and learn from him; I think he preferred that I should learn on my own.
‘My main influences were Renaissance painters, classical draughters and drawers. I began here because I wanted to try to perfect my draughting skill. Drawing is where I’ve been over the last decade, but in the last three years I’ve moved towards abstract imagery, more expressive paintings.’
