Four-door ‘coupés’ are de rigueur in 2010, even Aston Martin and Porsche are betting high stakes on them. A little down-market of these offerings are those of the German contenders: BMW and Audi. The latter’s A5 Sportback is a seriously appealing vehicle, which should fulfill most items on the wish-list of those in the mid-range sports saloon category. The 3.0TDI is the flagship.
We enjoyed this very pretty turbo-diesel for a week, driving it on different surfaces and in a variety of traffic conditions. It’s an impressively quick sports saloon and it’s often hard to appreciate that it has an oil-burning power plant, albeit aided by bi-turbo injection. The Sportback is supremely smooth and silent – which aids in the non-diesel impression – and very rapid; the fastest performer in the range at 6.1 seconds for the 0-100km/h dash.
