Rebirth on the Roof
1 JUNE 2011

Anyone visiting New York this Summer simply must find time to visit the spectacular Anthony Caro exhibition.
In the 60s, British artist Anthony Caro produced lively, infectiously playful sculpture. His five works are now on display at the rooftop garden at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. At 87, the artist is still going strong. He is currently working on an immense, multi-part sculpture that will occupy three blocks of Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan next year. All the more reason to revisit the time half a century ago when Caro and the Western world were momentarily possessed by a spirit of joyful, devil-may-care optimism.
I had the great privilege of meeting him at the opening event. An ardent admirer, I have placed many of his extraordinary pieces in my clients' collections through the years. Sir Anthony Caro will always be known as the genius who liberated sculpture by taking it off the pedestal.

Climate Control 2012
I will always recall my first May – late-Autumn – in Johannesburg, many decades ago. I had arrived from the UK Spring and was renting a circa ‘50s bungalow in Craighall Park. We were chilled to the bone after dark; such were the thin walls and large areas of glass, flimsy curtains and no fireplaces. A puny electric heater did little to rectify the situation. This was an early lesson in climate control in South Africa.

Perched above the city is the suburb of Örgryte: a lofty location that enjoys panoramic views which reach out to the west. Villa Woldu’s siting offers a stunning vista at the top of the road that climbs up from the main highway to Stockholm.
