Room Outside 2011

Spring in South Africa – the season of re-birth – very quickly becomes full summer. Ever more useful crossover interior / exterior spaces are refreshed and re-equipped, areas that can take full advantage of eight months of great weather. Our current architecture encourages an outdoor lifestyle by expanding on and exercising the uses in versatile entertainment spaces. Integration and functionality are key for living areas, terraces, patios, courtyards and pool decks.
Summer 2011 / 2012, indoor / outdoor entertainment areas will be represented with furnishings that are comfortable and easy to maintain. Yet they must be aesthetically appealing, to become an integral part of SA’s multi-functional lifestyle experience.
What makes successful crossover spaces work, how does one choose and use fixtures, fittings and decoration to best advantage? Floors, lighting, furniture and fabrics should incorporate the latest interior / exterior decorating techniques.
Renier Jansen of Bloc Outdoor comments: ‘Careful selection and spend should involve design, product, environment and function. South African outdoor living has increased to the extent that these spaces have achieved major status in homes. Instead of them being an area they are now the area. Flooring should co-ordinate with the adjacent interior décor where possible and furnishings that are comfortable yet appealing to the eye should be well thought out.
‘The major interest is for furniture that couples quality construction technique with the necessary design element. Sleek lines, comfortable seating and often bold colours are evident, as are modular units that can adapt to any space. Pieces should be able to withstand all our challenging climatic conditions i.e. with upholstery, and / or fabrics that are colour-fast on exposure to sunlight. Chosen well, outdoor furniture should last for a generation.’

Climate Control 2012
I will always recall my first May – late-Autumn – in Johannesburg, many decades ago. I had arrived from the UK Spring and was renting a circa ‘50s bungalow in Craighall Park. We were chilled to the bone after dark; such were the thin walls and large areas of glass, flimsy curtains and no fireplaces. A puny electric heater did little to rectify the situation. This was an early lesson in climate control in South Africa.

Perched above the city is the suburb of Örgryte: a lofty location that enjoys panoramic views which reach out to the west. Villa Woldu’s siting offers a stunning vista at the top of the road that climbs up from the main highway to Stockholm.
