The new BMW 6 Series Convertible fulfils the wishes of the discerning absolutely. It’s a finely-honed synergy of performance driving and groundbreaking luxury. In 650i guise, it’s the ultimate high-end roadster – and it looks very fine indeed.
This 2+2 delivers as a convincing concept with a very efficient engine, advanced chassis technology and the level of innovative comfort, infotainment and safety features. It’s unsurpassed in its segment. Gone is the fat-lip boot additive that hallmarked the Bangle-era 6 and 7 Series models. The new 6 reveals sculpted, sweeping lines from the bonnet, through the waistline to the chiselled rear end. In profile it’s quite stunning.
Being a big vehicle with a long wheelbase, it allows for a spacious four-passenger cabin. Inside its supremely comfortable and new chassis technology provides greater dynamic capability and a distinct improvement in ride comfort, compared to its predecessor. Drive Dynamic Control allows for various suspension settings, while Adaptive Drive is available as an option, with electrically controlled dampers and roll stabilisation. Integral Active Steering is a further driver-orientated option.
The 6 Series convertible is stimulating on the tarmac. Although large, it’s athletic, elegant and yet purposeful. Power is smoothly delivered through the 8-speed sports automatic gearbox; the result is turbine-like acceleration achieved almost soundlessly. One sits cosseted in a multi-adjustable sports seat, enveloped in a tailored interior that features high-echelon leather, veneer and alloys – all finely detailed and actually largely understated. The overall impression is one of serene comfort, control and security.

Climate Control 2012
I will always recall my first May – late-Autumn – in Johannesburg, many decades ago. I had arrived from the UK Spring and was renting a circa ‘50s bungalow in Craighall Park. We were chilled to the bone after dark; such were the thin walls and large areas of glass, flimsy curtains and no fireplaces. A puny electric heater did little to rectify the situation. This was an early lesson in climate control in South Africa.
DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE
High Society
Perched above the city is the suburb of Örgryte: a lofty location that enjoys panoramic views which reach out to the west. Villa Woldu’s siting offers a stunning vista at the top of the road that climbs up from the main highway to Stockholm.
