Take a Seat

Since man first decided to shelter himself from the elements, furnishing his dwellings has been a priority and what, in prehistoric times, might have been a rock or section of tree-trunk has evolved into a vital global industry worth billions of US$ annually. To relax / recline – while dining, drinking, reading, listening or viewing – is an essential factor in modern residential lifestyle; the daily regeneration necessary considering 2010’s frenetic pace.
Space is limited and this factor determines that careful consideration is necessary to furnish our living areas to their maximum functional and aesthetic potential. What to select in order to gain the most in terms of comfort and appeal? Consider the market sector targeted, South African interior design and decoration, and the manufacturing industry that supports it. It is well-equipped to offer numerous alternatives; imported options make up the balance of a healthy market segment.
The central points which influence our decisions include this matter of how much space is available, how much money can be budgeted to provide seating in the area and which style will balance with the architecture, lifestyle and needs of the household. It’s like buying a car: functional family sedan or luxury sports saloon? The decision discriminates between variables: disposable income, individual aspirations, identifying and projecting personality and intended use.
The use of springs is comparatively modern, often in conjunction with horse hair, flock, down and kapok; their introduction for padding spelled the beginning of modern upholstery. Foam rubber, acrylic fibre and moulded plastic composites followed and where frames were initially always of timber, now a wide variety of materials are used, from sprung steel to plastics.
The progression in the coverings that envelop these padded frames is less dynamic. Hides of various kinds, simulated leathers and suedes – like Alcantara at the upper end of the scale – natural weaves, intricate tapestries, jacquards, silks, cottons, blends and synthetics fulfil much the same function as their earlier counterparts.
