BMW’s new X2 is a clever vehicle in more ways than two. X2 shares some underpinnings with the Mini Countryman and duplicates certain power units – so is it a Mini with a new BMW body slapped on?

Not at all. For me Countryman is an ugly steroid version of the aesthetic Mini 2 concept as created by BMW. Countryman presents with a hard ride and is overall a sort of lumpy vehicle, which lacks eye appeal. It’s a no-no for me.

X2 however, is a pretty SAV nicely positioned between X1 and X3 (the all-time best selling BMW SAV). We drove it in the Western Cape and it artfully handled challenging mountain passes and rapid down hills like Chapman’s Peak Drive. Of the two engine versions – 2.0 petrol and 2.0 litre diesel – the latter had more torque but both offered the lively performance that is expected from the Bavarian marque.

The design of the X2 is markedly different and from the rear it’s not obviously a BMW, however, it does evoke a sporty heritage with a muscular stance that makes a confident impression typical of the BMW X model family.

Globally, SAVs are very much the direction of choice in 2018. They manifest as character-filled vehicles that appeal to younger, extrovert and active people who attach value to individuality. X2 ticks these boxes in offering fun at the wheel, plus space and functionality.

The car’s chassis and xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system promise secure roadholding while cutting-edge engine options create an ideal balance between sporting dynamics and exceptional efficiency. The digital services from BMW ConnectedDrive and BMW ConnectedDrive Services – both of which are now available in freshly updated form – add further intensity to the overall BMW X2 experience.

Sadly, it’s not cheap. X2 Prices range from R600 000 – R720 000 depending on engine choice.
