A new icon in the heart of Madrid, TÓTEM is set in the centre of Barrio de Salamanca, home to Madrid’s best boutiques, trendiest restaurants and buzzing bars.
TÓTEM is the newest addition to the Marugal Distinctive Hotel Management portfolio of boutique hotels, sharing Managing Director Pablo Carrington’s concept of simple luxury that characterises its sister hotels: Urso Hotel & Spa in Madrid, Torralbenc in Menorca and Cap Rocat in Mallorca.
The building dates from the 19th century and has undergone a restoration. Interiors have been masterminded by Barcelona-based design house Corium, with the idea of gently breathing new life into the building – and at once offering a deeply comfortable place to stay for the modern day traveller. The result is refined, elegant interiors with original features, including the original staircase. TÓTEM is located on the corner of two of the district’s most exciting streets and the bedrooms and suites are set over five floors. Each have big windows with plenty of natural light and sweeping views – over either the leafy boulevards or the bright central courtyard.
The design retains the stately atmosphere typical of the Salamanca district in the 19th century, at once bringing it perfectly up to date. Plenty of oak in the bedrooms, black marble in the bathrooms and brass decorative touches sit together with original, carefully restored plasterwork on the ceilings. Rooms are characterised by large mirrors and plush fabrics throughout, in turn reflecting the illustrious history of the building. Touches of local Madrid life are immediately apparent throughout; chocolates in the mini-bar are from fifth generation chocolatier Matias Lopez, while amenities are specially designed by Hand Made Beauty, a Madrid-based firm for organic, natural cosmetics and products.
Downstairs a sophisticated cocktail bar and lounge create the ideal meeting place from morning until evening. The restaurant, Hermosos y Malditos, with a concept inspired by the idea from The Beautiful and The Damned (the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel) offers a fresh reinterpretation of traditional Mediterranean cuisine with modern flavour combinations and unexpected ingredients.
