Pearl of the Middle East

Habitat‘s Linda Ransome visited Beirut in late September 2010. Voted the No.1 destination of 2009 by the New York Times, it followed suit that Umberto Cino, MD of Maserati Middle East chose Beirut as centre stage for a Lebanon Maserati ride and drive event. Her impressions follow:

Sceptred Isle

Born in England, publisher / managing editor Colin Sharp came to South Africa in 1968 and launched Habitat in 1973. He retains a distant – if reluctant – admiration for his homeland, preferring to recall it in the ‘50s, ‘60s and 70’s. During five days in mid-September he visited London and West Sussex as part of the 2010 BMW South Africa EuroStyle tour.

Mediterranean Odyssey

En route to the Greek Islands, aboard the Costa Romantica, I watched the Roman battlements of Emperor Trajan’s old port of Civitavecchia fade into the horizon. I awoke to a bright new day in the straits of Messina, slipping between the boot of Italy and Sicily, passing the volcanic island of Stromboli and the mountainous coast of Calabria.

A sociable couple’s boldly geometric new-build in a location near Cape Town blends sensitively into the landscape. It also provides equal emphasis on the interior and exterior.

The Villa Sow
Situated on a cliff-top overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Villa Sow in Dakar was completed in 2011. The house was designed for a Senegalese businessman and his family by SAOTA with Antoni Associates handling the interior décor. Most of the furniture was sourced from OKHA.

Ibiza is situated in the Gulf of Valencia, 80 kilometres from the Balearic main island of Majorca and 90 kilometres from the Spanish mainland.

Seamless Transition
Measuring a generous 800m2 on a sizeable stand of 2 000m2, this recently renovated home evolved from an existing structure, circa 1940’s. This was sympathetically redesigned to the client’s brief, with an extra storey added.

Habitat is 38 years old plus and – apart from a few cosmetic changes – the cover has remained the same for the past decade, albeit the internal content not so.

We’ve been around for 39 years. Habitat was first published in March 1973 and there have been more than a few gradients on our graph – both upside and downside – in those almost four decades.
