The Beautiful Game

Further to my last missive, it now seems that 465 000 people have visited SA for the Fifa event (State figures).

Favourable Destination?

Having just sent the latest issue to the printer - No. 218 July / August - I’m thinking yet again about the Fifa World Cup and what it could have/ might have / will bring to this country.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

With the 2010 Soccer World Cup upon us – and two epic rugby matches played in Orlando Stadium, Soweto in May – the patriotic unity among South Africans is likely at an all time high, since the post-Mandela election period.

Habitat On-line

This new website – and the variety of options it offers – is something of a milestone in Habitat’s development, albeit 37 years of existence in South Africa.

Concrete Conclusions

In this first issue of 2010, our annual focus feature examines architecture in South Africa, it’s somewhat tarnished recent history, the high points of the new millennium and the way forward in an incrementally eco-conscious society.

Rights of Passage

Hugh Masekela – an exceptional man, whom I am fortunate enough to count as a friend – said to Jennifer Crwys-Williams recently, in an interview on Talk Radio 702: ‘If you don’t know where you’ve come from, you’re not going anywhere’. Wise words indeed and particularly so in terms of this youthful country of ours; South Africa.

Ground Rules
In 2010, contemporary interior design in South Africa is reaching new levels of expertise. Yet, in a still recessive market, making space work – the synergy between architects and interior designers / decorators – is ever more vital.
House of Stone
I’ve just returned from 5 days in Victoria Falls, that vital oasis of foreign tourism and the hard currency that has kept Robert Mugabe’s tyrannical regime alive over almost two decades.

Street Legal
I had been waiting to drive an R8 since the original launch, but to no avail. Yet the more recently launched V10 was obviously the ultimate and it finally arrived in R-tronic configuration. It’s a supercar in every respect and truly rates very high, being among the best cars I’ve ever driven.
Art Of The Blend
Acclaimed cellar master, Niel Bester talks about the making of Grand Plaisir 2007, the exclusive signature wine of Plaisir de Merle, now available locally in a limited edition.
Room Outside
If this is a favourite time of year for many people – for me – it’s absolutely the supreme season. Winter, not that long an event in SA, is now just a chilly memory. Spring, this glorious season of re-birth – warms rapidly into full summer – and the result is the outdoor lifestyle that South Africans relish.
Leaf House
The house that existed on this very special 40 000m2 site was totally disassembled and re-erected in another beach location, outside Rio de Janeiro at Buzios. The unique home that replaced it has a built area of 800m2 and is described by the architects as ‘a simple beach house, with open and comfortable spaces’.
Yet To Come
Our Spring issue  – Sept / Oct, No.219 – is currently being printed by the those excellent practitioners of the litho art: Tandym Print CC of Epping, Cape.
Prestigious Saloon
Last week I was fortunate enough to be invited to drive the new Audi A8 in the George / Oudtshoorn region.
