Now 39 years old in 2012, Habitat remains a trendsetting lifestyle magazine published six times per annum.

Based in northern Johannesburg, South Africa, DTP is handled in-house, production systems are high-tech; reproduction is via CTP (computer to plate).

In 2005, 2006 and 2007 Habitat won the prestigious Admag Award for 'Best Decor / Best Home Magazine' - the fifth time this has been achieved. Our young and talented production team institute ongoing changes to design and layout, the most recent of which were revealed in issue No. 227. The result is cleaner more cutting-edge design, content and typography. Further, the international content has been increased, our rationale being that what constitutes contemporary design globally is a worthy catalyst for the local market.

State of Play
Well, so far – not so good – in 2013. Contacts in the interior design industry in UK tell me that – despite winning awards and receiving accolades – their businesses are in serious decline. The same must apply here in South Africa because Habitat’s clients across the board are hedging their bets. It’s a very difficult marketplace for most of us.

Architecture 2013
Architects have been icons within human society for aeons: Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright and more recently Philippe Starck, Sir Norman Foster and Zaha Hadid. Certainly, architects value their role in society but why does their iconic reputation exist? Is it because they are entrusted with the enclosing of space, and this on a planet with shrinking habitable areas for human occupation. This is the best case scenario for architects, but where does purism end and survival begin? Are some merely legal functionaries, that enable residential, corporate and public developments to be built.
