Celebrated South African documentary photographer and author, Matthew Willman, presents under one title, a unique collective of over 280 images selected from his 22 years as a global photographer. Willman’s latest book ’22 Years’ is an extraordinary visual account of a lifelong passion to engage with the world. His images go beyond borders and transcend boundaries to explore in intimate detail the lives of people and places few have ventured to discover. Willman is undaunted by the unknown; his work explores the ‘human condition’ wherever it might be found. Each image in the book opens up a fascinating world of episodic moments that so many take for granted.

Willman has expressed himself through an extraordinary body of work, which has included writing, storytelling and photographic exhibitions. He has gained over 20 years’ experience working for some of the world’s foremost institutions in the field of visual communication, development, visual arts and leadership. Willman has worked in 42 countries with an array of clients, which have included: Oxfam International, The World Health Organisation, The Nelson Mandela Foundation, The Vodacom Foundation, The National Underground Railroad Freedom Centre, Robben Island Museum and The European Commission.

He has been commissioned to photograph individuals from a cross-section of the global community: US Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, President FW De Klerk, Annie Lennox, 12 Presidents, 8 Nobel Laureates and a host of sports personalities, musicians, politicians and philanthropists. One of his significant contributions was the recording of the process of South Africa’s democratic change, which occurred, both in his work as a commissioned photographer to the Nelson Mandela Foundation and through ten years of work with Mandela himself.  In 2003 Matthew was commissioned to archive and document the life and times of Nelson Mandela and this collection of work is now central to the Mandela Centre of Memory and Presidential Library in Johannesburg.

’22 Years’ showcases the behind the scenes experiences, fleeting moments that go unnoticed, capturing extraordinary moments. It’s a rich tapestry of life, a testimony of determination to go beyond the confines of his own world to explore a rich cross-section of life, genres, cultures, creativity, ability and geography. Matthew Willman has achieved this.
