This fairly small estate – with some 160 homes marketed as an environmentally sensitive development – adheres to contemporary architectural guidelines. The 2 345-square metre site is moderately sloped in two directions. Views of the ocean extend to the east over neighbouring properties and to the coastal forest in front. To the north are rolling hills still under sugarcane and riverine forest. The house and stand-alone studio consist of three bedrooms (en suite), two personal separate studies, an open-plan kitchen, dining room, lounge and covered terrace with a breakfast court; plus a scullery, laundry and service areas with double garage. A feat hard to achieve, this project has furniture designs from top designer brands such as @bocadolobo, @bykoket, @baxtermadeinitaly, @lladro, @edra.official, @moooi, @baccarat, @tomdixonstudio, @fornasettiofficial, @kellyhoppenhome, among many others. Thought and designed entirely by husband and wife Vratika & Nakul, this amazing concept house, proves that with the right design inspiration and the help of the most exquisite luxury brands, every design lover can be their own interior designer. Every corner of this reflective home and every art piece in it, tells a story. Greatly inspired by top interior designers Phillipe Starck and Marcel Wanders, the client wanted to create white decor, with reflective surfaces to give the rooms a bigger feel. Exquisite material and unique touches in the furniture design bring a sense of glam into the luxury residence. The idea was to create an open space and in the process of making it, a lot of modifications were made. Ultimately, it was a trip to Salone del Mobile that brought many changes to the design structure, but also a lot of final decisions. Martín Azúa fuses material with light in his u Martín Azúa fuses material with light in his unique design of Halo Wall for VIBIA. In this 2020 evolution of an applique, Halo Wall provides a series of minimalist light sculptures that create a suggestive ambient lighting, which floats over the wall surface while at the same time bathing it with light. The basic unit of Halo Wall is a light rod that measures a metre in length and with its slim-line linearity, different graphic compositions are outlined and can be customised. The light bars, supported by an aluminium profile, can rotate to form parallel, perpendicular and inclined axes. Their modular nature will allow for large configurations to form light murals. With its double methacrylate diffuser, the lamp generates an attenuated light in which the LED technology disappears. The material becomes transformed into an emerging light in a seemingly magical fashion. Martín Azúa’s design manifests as a new lighting system that surprises and invokes an impactful aesthetic experience. Its expression recalls the minimalist artistic movement prevalent during the radical 1960s, an era that made such an impact on furniture design and relevant interior design projects. And which remains popular till this day. location: Zimbali, KZN | architects – Metropole location: Zimbali, KZN | architects – Metropole Architects; Design Architect Nigel Tarboton; Project Architect David Louis | interior design – Olàlà Interiors | photographer – Grant Pitcher Located on the east coast of South Africa, this three-level structure is situated in the prestigious Zimbali Coastal Forest resort 45 minutes north of Durban, and is home to a young family of four. Construction commenced in January 2018 and was completed in July 2019. With the architecture being subject to stringent estate design guidelines, which dictate traditional roof forms, the design sought to create a vision that remained in harmony with the neighbouring properties. Yet a second prerequisite was that it would represent the individual taste and aspirations of the new homeowners, illustrating their desire for a progressive and dynamic architectural aesthetic. Anna Lindgren and Sofia Lagerkvist are two of the Anna Lindgren and Sofia Lagerkvist are two of the founders of Front, a Swedish design studio of “avant-gardistes” who are keen to experiment, discarding the conventional along the way. “Our aim is to consistently add something special to a project. Or something that you would not expect,” the pair are quoted as saying. Collaboration between AXOR and Front started in 2013, culminating in AXOR WaterDream 2013. This was borne from the objective of ‘reinterpreting the shower’ and resulted in an incredible installation of pipes, valves and funnels, establishing brand new archetypes for an ablution that has been around for nearly two centuries. The WaterDream allows one to experience water in its original form by breaking away from old patterns. The installation was motivated by the need for radical freedom and focused on the path of water. In 2014, the AXOR WaterDream by Front won the coveted Wallpaper Design Award as the best concept for the shower. This success led to Front working on one of the AXOR shower sets, which received a German Design Award in 2015. This shower set embodied the idea that “nothing is hidden”.
