The award-winning, super-premium An Dúlamán Irish Maritime Gin is now available in SA and has been added to premium drinks company, Truman & Orange’s Extraordinary and Fabulous Gin Collection.

An Dúlamán Irish Maritime Gin is produced at The Sliabh Liag Distillery on the Donegal coast that is surrounded by one of the world’s most striking landscapes.  It is populated by resilient people, steeped in folklore and has a legendary distilling heritage.  (Dúlamán is, in fact, the name of an Irish folk song that relates a conversation between two seaweed collectors).

To capture “Draíocht na Farraige” (the magic of the sea) An Dúlamán is produced by combining five locally harvested seaweeds, Sweet Kombu, Dulse, Pepper Dulse, Dulaman and superfood Carrageen Moss.  It is then mixed with six botanicals: juniper, coriander, angelica, sweet orange, lemon and cassia, and after a particularly precise distillation process, the end result is a spirit with a taste that captures fresh juniper, an umami richness and the dry tang of sea breeze.

The black glossy An Dúlamán bottles are wax sealed with Celtic lettering on the front and colours that are reminiscent of the mountains found along the Donegal coast.  Each bottle has a batch number that is also linked to the lunar phases.

Renowned for introducing interesting, discovery brands to discerning South African drinkers, Rowan Leibbrandt, founding owner of Truman & Orange, explains, “Sliabh Liag Distillers is the first distilling company in Ireland for over 175 years and has been established with the purpose of reclaiming the distilling heritage of Donegal.”

“We are thrilled to have them as part of our Extraordinary and Fabulous Gin Collection, as they are intentionally challenging and seeking to be very different with a philosophy that is simple: liquids and recipes that rely on strong local provenance and that are worth talking about; striking designs that challenge conventional codes and to root each of their brands in a traditional local legend or folk tale,” say Liebbrandt.

Classic gin cocktails are a must-try with An Dúlamán – a favourite is the Negroni, the soft earthy tones of An Dúlamán stand up to the bitterness of Campari, and of course, it makes a mighty martini, with a good splash of vermouth.

Tasting Notes: The palate has incredibly bright and soft juniper to the fore and as it subsides An Dúlamán’s complexity is revealed in rich umami, brisk salt and then a buttery oyster smoothness with hints of chestnut and firm tannin. Given time, sweet notes of turkish delight ebb to a comforting warmth.

Perfect Serve: An Dúlamán works well with any premium tonic water, especially with lemon tonic or bitter lemon. A dash of elderflower cordial and An Dúlamán topped up with soda water is a tasty alternative.

Best paired with seafood and sushi.
