The Black Lion is the heirloom of years of winemaking in their continuous quest for perfection. It culminates the immense skill, dedication and profound passion of their winemaking team.

The 2015 vintage of this exceptionally exclusive Shiraz, The Black Lion, is even richer, bolder, and more elegant than before, with the most luxurious mouthfeel.

Fermented and aged in 200% new French Oak, each one of the mere 1058 bottles is individually numbered by hand and presented in an exquisite, handcrafted black wooden case, accompanied by the iconic Allen key that ensures the safekeeping of this rare collector’s item with an ageing potential of over 40 years.

As with the Book XVII, Infra-Red Aerial Imaging is used to specifically identify individual vines, which are then used to grow only four hand-manicured bunches per single vine. Each of these bunches receives individual attention and very specific manicuring during the ripening process after which it is hand-harvested and also destemmed by only the gentlest hands of a very select team.

The Black Lion is the result of the masterful alchemy of these hand-selected grapes from three specifically selected terroirs to combine the Swartland’s raw power with the indisputable elegance of the Helderberg and Polkadraai areas in Stellenbosch.

The South African harvest of 2015 has been recognised as one of the most promising years to deliver some of the country’s most exceptional wines due to the favourable weather conditions of the season. This, along with the extraordinary devotion and expertise invested in crafting this one-of-a-kind Shiraz, is proof of the pedigree of this creation’s great investment potential. It is unlike anything you’ve ever tasted and only available to customers, directly from our cellar.

“Tasting the wine there was almost a ceremony performed when opening and pouring the wine as the box is unscrewed. Before you even nose the wine you have big expectations and it does not disappoint, it’s a wine where all components are in harmony together.” – Gavin, The Wine Taster
