A piece of open land on an Umhlanga estate was subdivided into three stands and on two of these the architects were responsible for new residences. The brief here called for a modern four bedroom home, which would take advantage of limited sea views and garden space. The clients required an open plan living space with abundant natural light and ventilation – this resulted in a built area undercover of 375 square metres on a stand of 1 119 square metres.

Say the architects: ‘Being designed simultaneously with its neighbour meant that the remaining space between the structures was maximised to create a lush, expansive garden. The main living areas face north to take advantage of optimum natural light and views over the garden, while the bedroom spaces on the first floor look to the east to capture sea views.

The fourth bedroom was designed to be a flexible space which doubles as either a media room or guest bedroom, and overall the ‘floating’ bedroom wing creates an outdoor covered lounge and bar area below, which enhances indoor / outdoor living. Balau timber screens protect the house from direct solar heat gain.
