For over 60 years, the United Nations has been at the core of international cooperation in space activities for peaceful benefits. These benefits of space science and technology encompass the nation’s special needs, contributing to and supporting global and regional development agendas and gaining benefits for society at large. In that regard, the International Space Station (ISS) was built with artificial gravity space station exploration being determined as a new type of Interplanetary Human Station (IHS).

IHS’s six habitable modules will be constructed first as Ground System Engineering multipurpose urban settlements to test and coordinate the efforts in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), mastering specialised capabilities instrumental for humans to continue to live and work in space for millennia to come. This will encourage the development of robust space economies; the exterior is based on the fields of aerospace engineering and the interior will involve diverse disciplines such as medical health, physiology, psychology and sociology.

IHS implementation plan is drawn as a long-term sustainable development: its Heaven Mind Earth Study (HMES) project will enrich human collective knowledge and improve life on Earth. The aim is to inspire young people, promote diversity, and engage women in the STEM space sector to spark technological innovations, plus the space applications that stand at the core of the Space2030 Agenda.

The HMES mission will increase knowledge about outer space through enhanced access to astronomy and space science data. To fulfil our human destiny as explorers, the concept of the HMES project is developed as a secure, urban smart settlement, consisting of 12 mission programs and six functional habitable modules.

These include among others: Intelligent Super Luxury Estate (ISLE) – its main purpose being to explore the moral, spiritual and judicial qualities of a space-faring civilisation. Earth Stations (ES) will be where everything generates optimal conditions for smart workshops, libraries, space academies, hotels, restaurants, gyms, stores, lounges etc. Bioregenerative Food System (BFS) will include food production, processing and preparation to boost human physical and psychological well-being and protect the natural environment. And Green Smart Vertical Houses (GSVH) will be a 60-storey living innovation where resident children can use educational centres to study Human-Earth-Space connection that embodies modern trends in training and STEM education and is equipped with the latest AI technologies.

Promoting Space2030 agenda HMES is supported by the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) and provides its technical, policy and legal expertise.
