A landmark in Rosebank, Sandton, The Firestation has a rich heritage and history dating back to the 1930s and is one of the oldest and most well-known buildings in the area. During its redevelopment, there was a focus on creating a captivating modern commercial complex whilst still being respectful to the heritage of the site.

When Rosanne de Castro’s client, Rockwealth Capital, heard of the development they saw a vision of space and modernity in a new 8th-floor location. They required a shower, fully fitted kitchen, plenty of storage space,  lounge / relaxation / entertainment, a board room that could double as a dining room, plus work areas for directors and staff. Quite a big ask for a 100sqm space. Rosanne de Castro from Interior Design Workroom kept in mind her clients’ profile; energetic and dynamic entrepreneurs and introduced this into the design signature.

With the prerequisite to deliver sophisticated comfort – in a kind of pied-a-terre – she combined quarter sawn knot-free oak with warm, textured wallpaper, steel elements and black marble to create a  sophisticated yet comfortable ambiance. The floor was laid with engineered oak planks and cabinetry has deep concealed shelving with oversized sliding panels that allow for the storage of IT equipment.  A fully fitted kitchen with 4-plate stove, oven, integrated fridge freezer and dishwasher (All Smeg Appliances) allow Rockwealth Capital to enjoy daily lunches and facilitate client dining for any function. Workspaces in super matt black laminate by Cecil Nurse slot perfectly into the overall design.

In the boardroom the designer needed to create a space which could transform from board room meetings to three-course dining; she facilitated this through a famous  Gregor Jenkins Turned Table and Andreu World chairs from Tonic. A coffee machine, Smeg integrated bar fridge and wine cooler make it easy to cater for any situation without having to leave the boardroom. Sparing nothing on technology the room also has two TV’s and hi-tech sound.

One of the most important things for the partners was to be able to take a shower after their morning cycle to the office. Rosanne de Castro created an elegant, comfortable bathroom with ample storage space to keep extra clothes.

A large, upholstered deep blue velvet, sofa and coffee table by Mezzanine from Tonic, creates an inviting and comfortable feel in the reception / lounge area. Finishing off this space is a custom-designed armchair by Slab Studio and a server unit also from Tonic. Artworks by are by Tamara Osso, Theresa-Anne Mackintosh and MJ Turpin.
