Once again, South Africa’s best designers, architects and style shapers transformed the Sandton Convention Centre into Africa’s hotspot for the most innovative and covetable interiors. This year, visitors noticed the show’s progressive change in layout. The purpose is – and achieves – to offer intrigue and a personal voyage of discovery. Design Joburg 2019 featuring Rooms on View presented by Sanlam Private Wealth did not disappoint.

Here are some highlights:

Poggenpohl

We spoke to Klyne Maharaj of Poggenpohl South Africa:

‘Design Joburg is South Africa’s premier interior design, architecture and décor event. The event is in its third year and features a combination of both local and international designers and brands. It has built a reputation for attracting both high-end consumers, as well as local architects, interior designers, specifiers and developers. Because of the events premium nature and pure design focus, it set the ideal stage to showcase the +VENOVO in South Africa for the first time.

We wanted to show the +VENOVO in its natural habitat: an open layout mimicking a modern apartment. Key to this exercise was creating the sense that the exhibition stand felt liveable and contemporary. It was also critical to allow enough open space, and decorate the stand subtly, in order to emphasise one of the +VENOVOs key design features: it’s floating appearance and steel frames.’

Belgotex

Belgotex created a refuge from the crowds with a meditative space that visitors could relax in while familiarising themselves with two new residential carpet ranges: Living Matter and Mantra. Offering a sense of sanctuary through simplicity, the structure was divided into four distinct zones to educate, inspire, provide ornamentation and divide the space – with each element either reinforcing the idea of calm, sharing knowledge or serving to guide visitors via visual cues.

While the new ranges share an ethos of sensual softness and the luxury of living with less, certain touchpoints were amplified that when added to the zenscapes, plant life and light play, transformed the stand into a living space that encouraged visitors to slow down and reconsider how their relationship with something as ubiquitous as flooring might promote mindfulness in their homes.

Fabri & Miele

FABRI’s stand at Design Joburg 2019 was a testament to functional elegance and design versatility.

The kitchen, equipped with state of the art foldaway doors, showcased a concept that facilitates 5 different layout options, depending on which doors the user would choose to open or close. Furthermore, the addition of a mobile serving unit that is able to fit seamlessly under counter and an integrated herb garden transformed the island into a multifunctional hub of activity. The use of luxurious finishes, such as matte lacquer, olivier ash veneer, and Neolith countertops, furthered the elevation of the design from a standard kitchen to something extraordinary.

Adding to the appeal of this kitchen was the brand new offering from Miele, with appliances that have the capability to connect to wifi and be operated remotely. High-tech mechanisms such as touch-to-open fridges and ovens and a knock-to-open dishwasher drive home the feeling of ultimate luxury that is inherent in a FABRI kitchen.

One cannot forget to mention the opulent bespoke closet solutions offered by FABRI that were also on display. The elegant ash or linen interior finishes combined with integrated LED lighting and dramatic smoky glass doors create a focal point in any luxury bedroom suite.

The biggest FABRI store in the world has recently opened in Design Quarter, Fourways. Anyone striving for an effortlessly elegant home would do well to visit and be inspired by more bespoke kitchen and closet concepts.

Studio Dylan Thomaz with Créma and TileSpace

‘Créma had their best year yet at Design Joburg. Studio Dylan Thomaz were incredible collaborators – it is rare to find a company with which one’s own brand aligns so perfectly. Dylan himself really understands Créma and his vision for the stand – situating iconic designs in a contemporary context, thereby tracing the evolution of classics into future-classics – epitomises what Créma does and the products they sell.

The unique Créma collection showcases the world’s best indoor and outdoor luxury furniture, feature lighting, hand made carpets, office furniture and a broad range of accessories. Créma is extremely proud to continue to supply the very best in international design to high-end projects including private homes, offices, restaurants and boutique hotels throughout South Africa,’ says Daniel Boraine of Créma
