The boundaries between architecture and object design are fluent and ultimately a matter of perspective. Viennese architecture and design studio LABVERT headed by Stephan Vary appreciates the allure of this interplay between the different disciplines and sees it as a source of inspiration. When Graz-based Geba Rugs Gallery—in cooperation with the magazine 100 Häuser—invited eight internationally acclaimed architecture firms to design exclusive rugs under the motto “Architecture of the Plane” (Architektur der Fläche), Vary immediately accepted the challenge. The resulting designs, including the award-winning Labvert creation “Transitions”, will be presented in Graz from 24 May, 2019.

LABVERT’s aptly named “Transitions” series of rugs captivates with its bold choice of colours and deliberate departure from the austereness of the classic rectangular shape. Taking aesthetic inspiration from the Op-Art of the 1960s, the design explores the interplay between geometric shapes and stark colour contrasts, while the outline of the individual rugs elegantly communicates with their patterns. Conical lines in three complementary colours follow rounded contours, interlocking in surprising combinations.

“Transitions” is a statement—a rug that aspires to be more than just background, proudly featuring its shape and colours,” _Stephan Vary, LABVERT

With its striking design, “Transitions” creates a high-quality textile landscape that is both colourful and contemporary. The expert jury composed of CEO Harald Geba and Manuela Hötzl of 100 Häuser, as well as artist Michael Kienzer and legendary architect Gustav Peichl, deemed “Transitions” one of the three most innovative designs.

The implementation of the LABVERT design meets Geba’s high quality standards, with the rugs being hand-woven from the wool of mountain sheep in Nepal. Visitors are invited to gain a personal impression of this extraordinary creation starting 24 May in Graz, where the rug designs of all participating architecture firms will be presented to the public for the first time before being displayed at the Vienna Design Week and the Berlin Design Week.
